Lake Malawi Sailing Marathon 2025 Set for August: An Epic 600km Challenge Returns
One of Malawi’s most iconic and adventurous sporting events, the Lake Malawi Sailing Marathon (LMSM), is returning this year from 2nd to 9th August 2025, promising an unforgettable experience for local and international sailors. This year’s marathon covers a thrilling 6-day journey up the majestic Lake Malawi, starting from Chembe Eagles Nest (Cape Maclear) and finishing at Chintheche Beach in the north. Along the route, participants will sail past Senga Bay, Nkhotakota, Dwangwa, and Likoma Island, staying at various lakeside lodges and enjoying the spectacular scenery. Now running for over four decades since its launch in 1984, the LMSM has grown into a major regional event, celebrated for its combination of competitive sailing, adventure tourism, and cultural exploration. The 2025 edition will feature both Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker class races, with daily winners and overall champions awarded based on corrected handicap times. Organizers have emphasized safety, with rescue boats, medical staff, and mandatory safety equipment checks ensuring all sailors are well-supported throughout the week. An international charter option, transport services for ground crews, and reduced accommodation rates at partnering lodges make participation easier than ever before. Beyond the competition, the LMSM is a sailing safari that showcases the beauty of Lake Malawi — Africa’s third-largest lake — known for its clear waters, island views, and warm hospitality. From seasoned racers to first-time sailors, the event offers something truly unique.
